Visual FoxPro

• Visual Foxpro is a dynamic object oriented language that supports multiple class libraries, a class browser. It provides programmable dynamic (run-time) subclassing, and data dictionary capabilities. Microsoft Corporation released Visual Foxpro in June 1995, shortly before the introduction of Windows 95. Similar to Visual Basic, Visual Foxpro (VFP) is a RAD tool that uses ActiveX visual components, and interoperates through OLE automation or by creating COM servers. VFP can also subclass ActiveX components and COM automation objects.
• Like Smalltalk, Visual FoxPro operates on dynamic inheritance. It instantiates classes from a library or from base classes. It can also modify and save classes - including contained objects into the class library at run time. VFP Wizards provide UML re-engineering and code generation with Rational Rose and Microsoft Visual Modeler.
• There are two major versions of Visual FoxPro: VFP 5.0 (and beyond), first released in September 1996, runs exclusively on 32-bit Windows operating systems. VFP 3.0 released in 1995, runs on 32-bit and 16-bit versions (Windows for Workgroups, 3.1, 3.1.1) as well as the Macintosh, but does not provide complete ANSI SQL or COM server building capabilities.
• Visual Foxpro is one of several OO 4GLs, languages that combine OOP and inheritance with native SQL and other relational database capabilities. These languages tend to treat simple variables, object properties, and table fields similarly, allowing operations that include all three. In addition to VFP, three languages: Visual dBase, Alpha 5 Pro, and Visual Objects were also "xBase" languages, meaning they evolved from dBase II/III. Visual dBase 7, from Borland International, now an object oriented language is the direct descendant of dBase. Visual dBase provides some interesting Java-like OO extensions such as string classes and methods. Alpha 5 Pro from Alpha Software is based on a xBase variant called "xbasic." Visual Objects, which evolved from Clipper, was the first xBase language to include object extensions. However, Centura, originally SQL Windows and prior to that, Superbase were the first 4GL on Windows and both now have OO extensions.
• Finally, PL/SQL from Oracle Corporation for Oracle 7 and Oracle 8 is also an OO 4GL. It is not based on xBase, and is a server language rather than a Windows client, but does provide both native SQL as well as classes and objects. VFP and other Windows clients interoperate with PL/SQL through ODBC and OLE Objects for Oracle (OO4O).

MapInfo 6.0

Web-related

• New hot-link tool button to link map objects to specific urls, spreadsheets, or other documents.

• New MapBasic add-on to generate hot-spotted html pages (aka "image maps") based on your MapInfo map.

Our Opinion:

• The hot-links are a "me too" feature, in that ArcView has long offered and third-parties (including SGSI) have long offered the same functionality via free or low-cost MapBasic add-on's.   Still, it is great to see MapInfo embrace the concept and--better still--extend MapBasic to make the functionality controllable programmatically.

• The MapBasic utility to create hot-spotted html "image maps" we think will be even more widely used.  It will give many organizations an inexpensive way to get maps on the web--albeit as static not dynamic images. 

• Note:  "Image maps" are not a substitute for MapXtreme or MapXsite, MapInfo's widely-used interative web map server software options.

3d Perspective views

• Three-dimensional perspective viewing is helpful for visualizing terrain and other grid map layers.

• Note that this is not a 3d perspective viewer for zip code, street or other non-grid map layers.  It applies only to grid maps, although 3d grid map layers can have street map layers draped over them.

Access 2000 + Multi-User enabling

• Read/write data for all versions of Access, including Access 2000.

• MapInfo users can now read/write Access databases even if the databases are also open and in use by completely different Access applications.  This has been a frequently-requested feature.

• New improved direct OCI support for Oracle 8i  at Revision 8.1.6 and continued support for Revision 8.1.5.  Note that this is direct OCI support, not just ODBC.

Better color printing

• Define your personal preferences for important parameters related to color display and color printing.

• 24-bit Color printing is now supported for the first time.   [24-bit color display has been supported for some time.]

• A new color printing method is available which should speed up printing for some users.

• New Object menu options:  e.g., build a region enclosing all points in a table; build a region from simple street lines.

• More style and alignment control over cartographic (non-thematic) legends.

• Choose 1 of 3 alternative clip methods to constrain the area to show in a map windows.

• Better Scale Bar, and other included MapBasic utilities.

GOM Player

GOM Player is a popular video player that plays pretty much any video format you can think of.

This is one of those apps that goes unnoticed but proves to be excellent when you take the time to give it a try. It's a compact, easy-to-use video player lets you enjoy video files and movies in a wide variety of formats. What's more, you won't have problems with codecs because GOM Player already includes them – and if not, it automatically searches for the appropriate codec online.

GOM Player shows off a sleek interface with support for skins and has other powerful features: support for subtitles, favorites manager, support for playlists, use mouse and keyboard shortcuts for many functions and more. What GOM Player misses, for example, is the ability to take screenshots or even more important, to resume playback right where you left it (something I personally use a lot).

GOM Player offers to install the Google Toolbar during its installation process but you may as well decline the offer. As for the rest, it's a great video player that's well worth a try… even if you already have a favorite player.

GOM Player is a visually appealing video player with very interesting features and which, above all, solves any problem you may have with codecs.

As various media players jockey for position to become your default setting for music and video streams, GOM Media Player's support for a wide range of file formats has helped it stand out as a firm favorite.

Supported formats include DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF, AVI, and MOV, as are common codecs like FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, and H263. A pop-out playlist can save and organize your various media files, though the limited sort modes--two--hardly makes it a champ.

More impressive are the customizable settings on the control panel. Here you can adjust a video's image brightness, hue, and saturation. There's no preview window, and changes occur as the video runs, so unless you care for a rousing session of trial and error, be sure to tweak the settings after clicking "play." There's also a built-in screen-capture feature that includes zooming and panning, customizable themes, hot keys, and a host of preset and adjustable audio controls.

GOM is weakest when you're looking for help documentation and trying to tweak Save settings, but overall it's a very strong player worth at least a supporting role in your video-watching habits, if not the lead.
